About Vienna

For centuries the seat of the Habsburg emperors, Vienna remains one of Europe's grandest and most graceful capitals. Monumental palaces and museums line the Ringstrasse boulevard, the spire of St Stephen's Cathedral rises over the old centre, and the city's deep musical heritage - Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss - still fills its concert halls and opera house. It is repeatedly ranked the most liveable city in the world, and it is easy to see why. Vienna is a place to savour at a stately pace. Spend mornings among the gilded rooms of Schonbrunn and the Hofburg or before Klimt's shimmering Kiss at the Belvedere, then sink into a marble-and-velvet coffeehouse for a melange and a slice of Sachertorte, lingering over a newspaper as the Viennese have for generations. Evenings belong to the opera, a classical concert or a glass of wine at a heuriger tavern in the vineyard hills. Spring and autumn bring mild, comfortable weather, summer is warm and lively, and winter glows with Christmas markets and concert season. Dress smartly, ride the spotless U-Bahn, and let Vienna's old-world elegance slow you down.
