Quick facts

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October bring the most pleasant weather and slightly lighter crowds. July and August are hot, humid and very busy. Winter is cool, quiet and romantic but prone to acqua alta high-water flooding, especially from October to January. Carnival in February is spectacular but packed.

About Venice

There is nowhere on earth like Venice. Built across 118 small islands in a shallow lagoon, this improbable masterpiece has no roads, only canals and a maze of narrow alleys, squares and arched bridges. For more than a thousand years it was a great maritime republic, and that golden age left a city of marble palaces, Byzantine domes and Renaissance art that still seems to float between water and sky. The set-piece sights are extraordinary - the glittering mosaics of St Mark's Basilica, the pink Gothic Doge's Palace, the sweep of the Grand Canal best seen from a vaporetto or gondola, and the bustle of the Rialto Bridge and market. But Venice rewards wandering most of all: getting lost in the quiet back lanes of Cannaregio and Dorsoduro, finding a tiny bacaro for cicchetti and an ombra of wine, and taking the boat out to the coloured houses of Burano and the glass furnaces of Murano. Spring and autumn bring the loveliest weather and slightly thinner crowds; summer is hot and packed, winter atmospheric and prone to high-water flooding. Wear comfortable shoes, embrace getting lost, and let the most romantic city in the world cast its spell.
