Quick facts

Best time to visit

November to February is the cool, dry season and the most comfortable for temple visits, with pleasant days and clear skies - peak time. March to May is very hot. The green wet season from June to October brings short, heavy afternoon rains, lush jungle, full temple moats and the fewest crowds, with the Tonle Sap lake at its highest.

About Siem Reap

Siem Reap exists for one of the wonders of the world: the temples of Angkor, the sprawling capital of the mighty Khmer Empire that ruled Southeast Asia for six centuries. Spread across the jungle just north of town are hundreds of temples, led by the colossal Angkor Wat - the largest religious monument on earth - the serene stone faces of the Bayon, and the tree-strangled ruins of Ta Prohm. Watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat's five towers is one of travel's great moments. The town itself has grown from a sleepy village into a friendly, easygoing base, with a buzzing scene of restaurants, markets, spas and the neon nightlife of Pub Street, all at famously low prices. Beyond the temples lie the stilted floating villages of the vast Tonle Sap lake, traditional craft workshops, and a moving recent history that Cambodians share with remarkable warmth and resilience. The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable for temple-hopping; the green wet season brings dramatic skies, full moats and fewer crowds. Buy your Angkor pass, hire a tuk-tuk driver, start before dawn, and prepare to be awed by one of humanity's greatest achievements.
