Quick facts

Best time to visit

Late April to June and September to mid-October are the sweet spot - warm, sunny days, swimmable seas and fewer crowds than peak summer. July and August are hot, busy and expensive. Many businesses close from November to March, when the island is quiet, windy and atmospheric.

About Santorini

Santorini is the postcard that launched a thousand honeymoons: sugar-cube houses and cobalt domes clinging to black cliffs, a vast water-filled caldera left by one of history's greatest volcanic eruptions, and sunsets so famous that crowds gather nightly to applaud them. It is small, dramatic and utterly photogenic, the kind of place that looks unreal until you are standing in it. The island rewards both indulgence and curiosity. Days drift between cliff-edge infinity pools, long lunches of fresh seafood and assyrtiko wine, and walks along the caldera rim from buzzing Fira to serene Oia. Beyond the views there is real history: the astonishing Bronze Age city of Akrotiri, buried by ash like a Greek Pompeii, and ancient Thera high on its ridge. The volcanic soil also produces distinctive wines and the sweetest cherry tomatoes you will ever taste. Come in late spring or early autumn for warm seas and softer crowds, base yourself by the caldera for the views or near the beaches for value, and accept that the sunset really is worth the hype - just arrive early to claim your spot.
