About Rome

Rome is a city where you trip over history on the way to lunch. Ancient temples sit beside Baroque piazzas, Renaissance palaces hide Caravaggios, and a 2,000-year-old dome still floats above the Pantheon. Nowhere else can you stand in a gladiatorial arena in the morning, cross into a sovereign papal state by afternoon, and finish the day tossing a coin into a marble fountain at midnight. The centro storico is made for walking. Cobbled lanes open without warning onto Piazza Navona or the Trevi Fountain, and the great sights - the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon and Vatican - sit within an easy stroll or a short Metro ride of one another. Between them, Rome is best enjoyed slowly: an espresso standing at the bar, a long trattoria lunch of cacio e pepe, an evening passeggiata through Trastevere. Come in spring or autumn for warm days and thinner crowds, book the Vatican and Borghese ahead, and leave room in the itinerary for getting happily lost. Rome rewards the unplanned hour more than almost any city on earth.
