About Prague

Prague looks like a storybook come to life. Spared the worst of the 20th century's wars, the Czech capital preserves an astonishing sweep of architecture - Romanesque cellars, Gothic spires, Baroque palaces and Art Nouveau facades - all stacked along the curving Vltava river and crowned by the largest ancient castle complex in the world. Add cobbled lanes, hidden courtyards and some of the best and cheapest beer on the planet, and you have one of Europe's most enchanting cities. The classic route is unforgettable: the medieval Old Town Square with its hourly astronomical clock show, the statue-lined Charles Bridge at dawn, and the climb through Mala Strana up to Prague Castle and the soaring St Vitus Cathedral. But Prague rewards exploring beyond the postcard centre too, from the poignant synagogues of the Jewish Quarter to the riverside parks, the Lennon Wall and the buzzing, bohemian neighbourhoods of Vinohrady and Zizkov. Spring and autumn bring mild weather and thinner crowds, summer is lively and warm, and winter turns the city into a magical, snow-dusted Christmas-market scene. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles, raise a glass of pilsner, and let the City of a Hundred Spires charm you.
