Best time to visit

March to June and September to October are ideal - warm, sunny days, blue skies and manageable crowds. July and August are hot and busiest, though the Atlantic breeze keeps Lisbon more comfortable than inland. Winters are mild and quiet, with some rain and the lowest prices.

About Lisbon

Lisbon spills down seven hills to a glittering estuary, a city of pastel buildings, patterned tiles and steep cobbled lanes where vintage trams still groan up the slopes. It is one of Europe's oldest and sunniest capitals, and one of its best value, with a relaxed, salt-air mood that makes it easy to slow down and stay a while. Days are spent wandering the medieval lanes of Alfama, riding Tram 28 past the cathedral, climbing to miradouro viewpoints for a glass of wine at sunset, and eating your weight in custard tarts. The grand monuments of Belem - the Manueline monastery and riverside tower - recall the Age of Discovery, while neighbourhoods like Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodre come alive after dark with fado houses and rooftop bars. Lisbon is also the perfect base: the fairytale palaces of Sintra and the beaches of Cascais are a short train ride away. Come in spring or autumn for warm, gentle weather, wear shoes that grip the slippery calcada pavements, and let the city's easy rhythm set the pace.
