About Hanoi

Hanoi is a city that overwhelms the senses in the best way. The capital of Vietnam wears its thousand years of history on every corner: ancient pagodas beside French colonial mansions, lakeside temples reflected in still water, and the glorious chaos of the Old Quarter, where 36 ancient streets each once sold a single trade and motorbikes flow like a river. This is one of the world's great food cities, and eating is the main event. Perch on a plastic stool for a steaming bowl of pho, smoky bun cha, fresh banh mi or the city's own invention, egg coffee, a velvety cup that tastes like liquid tiramisu. Between meals, wander the shaded paths around Hoan Kiem Lake, watch a water-puppet show, pay respects at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, or lose an afternoon in the serene Temple of Literature. Hanoi is also the gateway to the north: the emerald karsts of Halong Bay, the rice terraces of Sapa and the limestone country of Ninh Binh are all within easy reach. Atmospheric, affordable and intensely alive, it rewards travellers who slow down and let its rhythm pull them in.
