About Florence

Florence is a living museum of the Renaissance, a compact, walkable city where Brunelleschi's terracotta dome still dominates the skyline and the streets are lined with the palaces, churches and workshops of the Medici age. In a few square kilometres you can stand before Michelangelo's David, Botticelli's Birth of Venus and the goldsmiths' shops of the Ponte Vecchio, all bathed in the soft Tuscan light that inspired centuries of artists. This is a city to savour slowly. Mornings are for the great galleries - the Uffizi and the Accademia - and the climb up the cathedral dome; afternoons drift across the river to the artisan workshops and leafy gardens of the Oltrarno, and up to Piazzale Michelangelo for the classic view at sunset. Florentine food is hearty and superb, from bistecca alla fiorentina to crusty schiacciata sandwiches, washed down with Chianti. Beyond the city walls lies Tuscany itself: the vineyards of Chianti, the towers of San Gimignano and the medieval beauty of Siena, all within easy reach. Come in spring or autumn for warm days and fewer crowds, book the big galleries ahead, and let the home of the Renaissance work its magic.
