About Barcelona

Barcelona is the sun-drenched capital of Catalonia, a Mediterranean city where Gothic alleyways open onto Modernista fantasies, and where lunch on a beach terrace can melt straight into a midnight tapas crawl. No city wears its art so openly: Antoni Gaudí''s undulating façades and the still-rising spires of the Sagrada Família have made Barcelona an open-air museum of imagination. The city is wonderfully walkable and wildly varied. Lose yourself in the medieval lanes of the Barri Gòtic and bohemian El Born, stroll the leafy boulevards of the grid-planned Eixample (home to Gaudí''s Casa Batlló and La Pedrera), then descend the tree-lined Rambla to the Boqueria market and the harbour. To the north, Park Güell spills mosaic colour over the hills; to the east, the golden sands of Barceloneta meet the sea. Catalan culture runs deep here - in the language, the FC Barcelona faithful at Camp Nou, the human-tower castells, and a food scene that ranges from world-leading avant-garde kitchens to humble vermouth bars. Add reliable sunshine, a buzzing nightlife and superb public transport, and Barcelona makes one of Europe''s most rewarding city breaks.
