Quick facts

Best time to visit

April and May bring tulip season and mild, bright days, while June to August offers the warmest weather and lively canal-side life (and the biggest crowds). September is lovely and quieter. Winter is cold and dark but cosy, with festive lights and ice-skating, peaking around the King's Day celebrations in late April.

About Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city built on water and lived on two wheels. A web of 17th-century canals, lined with narrow gabled houses and crossed by hundreds of bridges, fans out from the old centre in a perfect crescent - a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of golden-age town planning. Bicycles outnumber people, houseboats bob at the quays, and the whole place has a relaxed, tolerant, faintly bohemian air. For its size, Amsterdam punches far above its weight in art. The Rijksmuseum holds Rembrandt's Night Watch and a treasury of Dutch masters, the Van Gogh Museum gathers the world's largest collection of his work, and the Anne Frank House preserves one of history's most moving stories. Between museums, the pleasure is simply being here: cycling the canal ring, browsing the Jordaan's boutiques and brown cafes, and watching the world drift by from a waterside terrace. Come from April to September for long days, blooming tulips and canal-side life in full flow, though the city is atmospheric year-round. Rent a bike, learn to dodge the trams, and let Amsterdam's gentle pace carry you along.
